South Church History

Andover, Massachusetts was incorporated in 1646 (at the time it also included North Andover). The Church in the South Parish of Andover was founded in 1711. The first pastor of South Church was Rev. Samuel Phillips. The Church was renamed South Church in Andover in 1932. For a more detailed timeline of the church's history, please visit South Church's website.

Established in 1709, the South Parish Burial Grounds contains many interesting gravestones. The first recorded burial was in 1710.

The oldest original remaining stone belongs to Anne Blanchard who died on "Febr'y 29th, 1723." The first two pastors of South Parish, three captains of the Andover Militia who marched on Concord, Lexington and Bunker Hill, and 81 veterans of the American Revolution are buried here.
